One of the biggest questions I get from clients is, “how do I get my toddler to smile?” That’s a totally valid question! You are not alone. As moms, we are always concerned about how our children are going to act no matter where we go. And for photoshoots, there is always that time factor. So of course, we are going to fret that our child is going to behave. More so when it comes to toddlers who are at an age where they may not understand what’s going on. And of course, that stranger danger stage doesn’t help either. Does this sound like you? I’m here to help!! Below, I’m sharing How to get your toddler to smile in family photos.
This right here is the money-maker advice. Bring along grandma or even grandpa – aunt or uncle. Whatever adult is their favorite adult that isn’t mom or dad. If you don’t bring someone else to family photos, chances are you will be looking at your child in every photo either trying to get them to look happy or making sure they are happy. It is stressful. It also allows us, the photographer, to focus more on getting those great shots as well.
This is something I tell my clients all the time no matter the age of the child. Bring something that you can bribe your child with and will be effective. Whether that’s a favorite toy, candy, etc. bring it. Don’t give it to them during the session but use it as a verbal bribe to get them to smile. Depending on how many you bring, rewarding them after each set of poses works great too (unless it’s sticky candy or chocolate, ha!).
Isn’t this the oldest trick in the book? We thought there was no way it was going to work but guess what? It worked every single time! There is just something they love about not doing what they are told. Sometimes this even gets a beautiful laugh that is just amazing.
All in all, don’t take it too seriously. Have fun with your child! Play with them! TICKLE THEM! These photos will end up looking natural because they are natural. Kids love to play and when you give them the opportunity to have fun, most of the time they don’t mind being photographed.
